TRAI recommends overhauling the country's internet backbone
September 15, 2005
In a recently released consultation paper, TRAI has recommended overhauling the country's internet backbone to move to the next-generation protocol, called IPv6, from IPv4, to facilitate the growth of broadband and internet services. According to TRAI, the existing version may not be able to provide the large amount of IP addresses that would be required in future with the growth of internet and broadband services. In addition, the new version is seen as having better security standards, quality of service and mobility support.
The government has already set up an IPv6 Implementation Group to chart out a roadmap for the new internet version.
